What We Do
Whitehaven supports the provision of Christian Science nursing care for those who radically rely on Christian Science for healing. The Trust sees Christian Science nursing as an essential part of the healing ministry, and currently maintains a Visiting Christian Science Nursing Service as a Domiciliary care agency registered with the Care Quality Commisssion. This service enables patients to receive practical care and support in their own homes.
The Trust also provides training and mentoring for Christian Science nurses.
The trustees are currently looking into creating a new, small care facility. This would be a continuation of the successful larger facility it ran for many years near Bath.
Exciting Times – building on a strong caring tradition
A message from the trustees
In the 60 years or more since Whitehaven Trust was founded it has achieved a great deal in the practical demonstration of Christian Science healing. Over those years hundreds of people have been lovingly cared for and returned healed to their friends and families as the result of their own prayers and the conscientious support of Christian Science practitioners and Whitehaven’s own dedicated Christian Science nurses.
We continue to build on this work and are now preparing to move forward with our healing mission. We welcome the support of our friends across the world. The original Whitehaven building was closed in 2007 and since then the trustees, together with the Trust’s company members, have been reviewing and praying about the next steps. It is the earnest desire of the trustees, supported by our company members, to establish a new Christian Science nursing building to serve our area.
In looking forward to a bright future we are keen to acknowledge the outstanding healing work being carried on by Charton Manor and Lime Tree House (Christian Science nursing facilities in other parts of the UK).

What is a Christian Science nurse?
The role of Christian Science nurse was established over 100 years ago by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and is described in the Manual of The Mother Church Article VIII, Section 31 (page 49):
Christian Science Nurse. SECT. 31. “A member of The Mother Church who represents himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick room, and who can take proper care of the sick.
The cards of such persons may be inserted in The Christian Science Journal under rules established by the publishers.”
There are hundreds of Christian Science nurses across the world providing compassionate and practical care for people both in their own homes and in Christian Science nursing facilities.
Christian Science nursing care in the home
For many years Whitehaven Trust has provided the Christian Science Visiting Nursing Service for the South West of England and often further afield.
Today, we have two dedicated and experienced Christian Science nurses on-call to help people in their own homes and provide practical nursing and support.
Patients are often given financial assistance both by the Trust itself and by the The Aid Fund for Christian Scientists in Need of Nursing Care. The paramount factor is that anyone who needs the care should receive it regardless of their ability to pay.
